Did you know Valentine’s Day is also National Donor Day?

National Donor Day

While flowers and chocolates are nice, the gift of organ donation can last a lifetime. This Valentine’s Day, HelpHOPELive encourages you to open your heart to the more than 120,000 men, women and children in the United States who are awaiting a transplant by celebrating National Donor Day.

National Donor Day raises awareness about the importance of organ, blood, marrow, stem cell and eye and tissue donation, and encourages people to register to become donors.

The need is great. In the U.S. alone, 18 people die each day waiting for an organ, and every 10 minutes someone new is added to a waiting list. One donor can save up to 8 lives, and enhance the lives of up to 50 people.

Thanks to the generosity of countless individuals who made the decision to become organ donors, 162 HelpHOPELive patients received the gift of life in 2013. Your decision today can help save and improve lives.

So this Valentine’s Day, give your heart to someone who really needs it by educating yourself on how to become an organ donor: http://www.organdonor.gov/.

  1. Also, as I recently learned, the large medical costs of the organ donor are typically not covered by insurance — only the costs of the organ recipient.
